Leyla Zana

A Kurdish-Turkish activist and politician, born in 1961 in Silvan. In 1991 she became the first Kurdish woman elected to the Turkish parliament. When she took her oath she added a sentence in Kurdish — and was sentenced to ten years in prison. In 1995 she received the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize.
