Mustafa Barzani

The foremost Kurdish military and political leader of the 20th century, born in Barzan in 1903. He led repeated revolts against Iraqi governments and founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party in 1946. Called "Mela Mistefa," he is regarded as the father of the modern Kurdish national movement in Iraqi Kurdistan. He died in the United States in 1979.
