Yılmaz Güney

A Kurdish-Turkish director, actor and writer. Born in Adana in 1937, he turned from a Turkish box-office star into the country's most insurgent filmmaker. Directing *Yol* from prison in 1982, he shared the Palme d'Or at Cannes with Costa-Gavras. He escaped to France and died of stomach cancer in Paris in 1984. His films are a hymn to peasants, Kurds and oppressed women.
