Between 1986 and 1989, the Ba'athist regime carried out eight systematic campaigns against the Kurds of northern Iraq, named "Anfal." Between 100,000 and 182,000 Kurds were killed and over 4,500 villages destroyed. Iraqi courts in 2007 and 2010 recognised the campaign as genocide.
