On 22 January 1946, Qazi Muhammad proclaimed the Kurdish Republic of Mahabad on Chwarchira Square — the first independent Kurdish state of the modern era. It lasted only eleven months before Iranian troops entered the city. Qazi Muhammad and his comrades were hanged on 31 March 1947, on the very platform from which the flag had been raised.
