The city of olives in northern Syria, home to the region's oldest olive groves.

The city's history

Afrîn

Olives have been cultivated in the valley of Afrîn for four thousand years. The city had a historical role in the Kurdish Hamavi emirate, then became a hub for the Kurds of Syria. A major military campaign in January 2018 changed its demographic face — but the olive trees still grow on every hillside.
