The city that stood against ISIS in 2014, becoming a worldwide symbol of Kurdish resistance.
The city's history
Kobanê
Kobanê (officially Ayn al-Arab) was founded around the Hejaz railway in the early 20th century and grew into a small Kurdish town. In September 2014 it was besieged by ISIS, and held out for 134 days in a battle the world watched, freed in January 2015. Whole districts remained in ruins, but out of the rubble, the figure of the Kurdish woman fighter rose as a global icon.
