The city's history
Qamişlo
Qamişlo was founded in the 1920s on the border with Nusaybin in Turkey, originally as a refuge for Armenians and Syriacs fleeing the 1915 massacres, then growing into a clearly Kurdish city. The first Kurdish radio and newspaper in Syria came from here, and its cafés and streets still breathe in Kurmanji.
