The city of the first Kurdish Republic, which stood for only eleven months in 1946, but remains a symbol.
The city's history
Mahabad
Mahabad is an ancient city in western Iran, once the seat of the Mukriyani emirate. On 22 January 1946, Qazi Muhammad proclaimed the Kurdish Republic of Mahabad on Chwarchira Square — and a city became every Kurd's dream. The republic lasted only eleven months; Qazi Muhammad was hanged on that same square in 1947. The flag of that republic became the national Kurdish flag.
